History

In 1955, as a newly graduated Illinois pharmacist, Mr. John B. Davidson came to Florida on vacation. In love with the area and convinced it offered great opportunity, he spent most of that vacation interviewing with pharmaceutical companies. By the next year he was based in Sarasota, working as a sales rep for a drug distributor, but looking for a site for his own store, Siesta Key seemed just right.

John B. Davidson vividly remembers 1958 when he opened the first drugstore on Siesta Key. He swept the sidewalk in front of his business at 8:30 every morning and closed up himself every evening at 9:00. For five years he worked 80 hours a week, even operating the soda fountain. Some said his business would never survive on the sparsely populated Siesta Key, which many believed would never develop. But they were wrong.

Today, Mr. Davidson has three thriving stores located throughout Sarasota. His is the oldest established drugstore under the same continuous ownership in Sarasota. Two of Davidson’s sons, Richard and Robert, help operate the family business today.
